Welcome to the Adult Education page! My name is Travis Allen, the Adult Education coordinator. Here you will find information and updates for all of our Adult Education classes! For information about each class, when they are being held, and who the instructor is, simply click on the articles below. I also welcome your questions, comments, suggestions for new classes, or suggestions as to how we can make our program even better. You can do so by filling out the forms below.

Beginner Quilting Class "Crazy Nine-Patch": 7 weeks

Come learn how to make an amazing quilt! This class is suitable for all levels of quilters but focuses on providing support for quilters who are just starting out. Please come to the Superintendent's Office to see a finished version of this semester's quilt and to pick up your supply list!

Bow Hunting Safety: 1 week

Ever wanted to speak to someone who speaks another language? Well, this is for you... everything you wanted to know about basic French but were afraid to ask. This class is to master the basics of speaking that most romantic language--French. General conversation, expressions, and opening our world to new frontiers are what this class is all about - personal enrichment at its best. This will be a multilevel class, so all levels of French speakers, those with no experience to expert, are invited to participate.

All levels welcome! Parents and adolescents are welcomed to take this class together for a fun family activity, Basic requirements include sketch pad, pencil, and eraser, but Scott will help you explore your artistic ability with whatever art supplies you choose to bring!
First Year of College 101*: 1 Night $5.00 per participant

So, you or your child will be going to college, but do you actually know what the very important first year will be like? Here is a chance to learn what you really need to know about the first year of college including common pitfalls of first year students, academic skills, safety, social skills, and much more. Jennifer's postsecondary career has included serving as the Assistant Director of Residence Life for multiple colleges and as an Academic Advisor. This is not a session about financial aid, but about what to expect and how to prepare for the first year of postsecondary education.

With this hands-on class, and with step-by-step instruction, you will learn how (and why) to use the suite of creative and productivity tools that Google offers for free. Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Maps and Sites are just a few of the Apps you'll explore. With Google Apps, you can manage multiple calendars, collaborate on documents, create forms and even design your own websited -- all for free, and with ease.
GPS Navigation: 4 weeks

Before you go into the woods with your GPS, you should be sure you know how to use it correctly! This course will familiarize the beginner with the basics of navigation, including how to use a topographic map, how to plot a course, how to utilize a grid system, and of course how to use a GPS. This class is taught by a Maine Guide who has over 30 years of wilderness expreience.
High School English Completion: 15 weeks

This class explores multiple types of literature and strives to develop lifelong literacy skills that are crucial for all aspects of life. Space is limited and priority placement goes to current high school students, but community members and parents of other students are certainly welcomed to participate as space allows.
Intermediate to Advanced Quilting: 7 weeks

This class is suitable for all levels of quilters who have basic quilting knowledge. There will be multiple quilt patterns to choose from in the Superintendent's Office with supply lists so you may choose the quilt that is just right for you!
Introduction to Digital SLR Photography: 6 weeks

Receive a new digital SLR as a gift? Had one for a while but don't understand how the settings work? This class is an introduction to the SLR camera and will cover the basics of exposure using manual and semi-manual camera settings (and why one would want to use these settings), lens selection, and how to achieve different types of photographs effectively.
Scrapbooking: 8 weeks

Not just a scrapbooking class! Come learn techniques about what types of tools to use for scrapbooking, card making, tags and much more. Each class will have a two page layout and two to three other projets (examples-cards, tags, stamping project, paper bag album, etc.) You can pick up a supply list and the first layout/project sheet at the Superintendent's Office.
Self Defense & Introduction to Martial Arts: 6 weeks
Hermon Elementary School Gymnasium
6 PM - 7 PM
Dates: 2-7, 2-14, 2-28, 3-7, 3-14, 3-21
Come and gain essential self-defense skills, and also gain an introduction to Martial Arts. In addition to the basic self-defense skills, this course will include such topics as the origins of martial arts, the appropriate application of martial arts, and the development of personal characteristics. The primary art will be Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate & Kobudo, and will utilize instructors from Ease Coast Karate & Self Defense.
Sign Language: 8 weeks

Come learn how to use sign language! This is a full emersion program, as your instructor does use Sign Language as a primary means of communication. No experience necessary - a fun and educational class for the entire family.
