Title I is a component of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This is a federally funded program that allocates supplemental money to schools around the country based on the number of low-income families residing in a district. Districts are then able to use that funding to create educational support systems for students who are in need of educational support. The funding and programs work to ensure that all students are able to be successful in school.
The Patricia A. Duran School meets the eligibility requirements for Title I, and has been identified by the federal government as a Targeted Assistance School. At the Duran School, students who are eligible for Title I services can receive support in the areas of literacy and/or math. These supports are provided by dedicated, certified K-8 instructors specializing in either literacy or mathematics.
Once a student has been identified for title services and a schedule has been set, it is a requirement that the student attends intervention when present at school and when title services are being held. Title I services are provided 4-5 times per week for a minimum of 20-30 minutes.
There are several programs that a student could be working with when receiving Title I services. Each program is a research-based intervention that the instructor uses to reach each child’s individual learning needs. The following is a list of the research-based programs and approaches that are used in our Title I program:
Literacy-based Interventions:
Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)
Orton-Gillingham Based Multi-Sensory Instruction
Mathematics-based Interventions
Key Math Essentials
Do the Math
Over the course of a child’s work in Title I, the instructors are maintaining and communicating data with the child’s classroom teacher. The Title I teachers and the classroom teacher discuss the student’s progress as well as their ability to produce grade-level work in the classroom. Once the team has determined that the student is no longer in need of services, they will be dismissed from Title I services.
